April Update (in June)

The first story I’d like to remember happened around Easter. Ken and Lynda had sent Kyle an interactive email card game where one had to move a bunny with easter baskets across a road, and not get hit by the moving objects (a lot like Frogger). I think there was a timeframe, so if you’re bunny got hit, you just had to start back over with a new bunny. At the end, it would give you a score for how many baskets you got across the road in the specified time. So, Kyle played it once and by carefully guiding the bunny across the road, he saved 5 Easter baskets. Then Katie wanted to play and she just held down the right-arrow key and without regard for how many bunnies died in traffic, she saved 44 Easter baskets!

The second thing that we thought was pretty funny happened around the same time. Jeff was showing Kyle a portion of the Battle at Helm’s Deep from one of the Lord of the Rings movies. For those of you who aren’t familiar, the movies are based on a set of books by Tolkien that have men, dwarves, and elves fighting together against the evil forces of orcs and goblins in a feudal type time period. Anyway, so he’s watching the movie and Jeff is pointing out little odds and ends. Oh, they’re going to stay behind the wall, oh, they are going to try to climb the wall to get them, etc. So at some point the elves come in from behind the evil army because it has taken a long time for them to get to the battle. And Jeff points out, “Oh, there are the elves. They’ve made it and they’re going to help the good guys fight.” Then Kyle turns to Jeff and says, “Oh. But why would Santa’s elves want to go fight orcs and goblins?” I just about rolled on the floor laughing when Jeff recounted this to me later!

Katie still loves dresses. She likes lip gloss and painted fingernails, princesses and fairies, and shiny ribbon and colored paper. However, she is anything but quiet and dainty. She roughhouses with her brother and has no problem getting dirty when she plays. She’s incredibly and amazingly stubborn, but also really independent and a very good self-starter. If Mom and Dad are too busy to do something, it doesn’t take long for her to decide to just do it herself. Which is both good and bad, depending on whatever her objective is. More on this to come!
