Negotiating Dinner with Katey

We are eating Kraft Macaroni and Cheese for dinner, with peas and ham. Katey decides she would like more ham. I tell her she needs to eat her mac n cheese and peas. She gets through the peas, and asks again. So I tell her, okay, you eat a forkful of mac and cheese and I'll give you a piece of ham. Here is her forkful of mac and cheese and the look I got from her:

Hide and Seek with Kyle and Katey

Setting: Sitting in our bathroom (I was brushing Katey's hair), the kids decide they want to play hide and seek. Mom counts first. The floor of the bathroom is like a 5x5 foot area with a doorway that opens into our bedroom. Our clothes hamper is located in the bedroom right next to the open doorway - out of sight, but about 4 feet from where I'm sitting on the floor.

"Okay, kids. I'll start counting." I close my eyes. "One...two...three..."

There's some scuffling sounds a few feet away, and I hear Katey saying, "Let ME hide with you, Kyle. Help me." Clearly, Kyle has climbed into the clothes hamper to hide.

"Four...Five..."

Kyle pleads, "No, go away. I'm hiding here. KATEY!"

I open my eyes. "Okay, Kyle, I'm sorry, but Katey gave you away. I know where you are hiding. You should probably pick someplace else to hide-"

"Arrrggggh! Katey! You ruined everything! Stop followi-"

I interrupt. "Kyle, Kyle, calm down. I'll start couting again. Katey is probably going to follow you. Maybe you should help find a place for Katey to hide, and then you hide yourself. I'll count very, very slow so you have enough time to hide. Okay?"

"Uuuggghh! Fine!"

"Okay, here I go. One... ..., two... ..."

As soon as I get "One" out, Kyle begins to panic. I hear him say, frantically, "Okay c'mon Katey, hurry, let's go!" They scamper away and he continues, now yelling," OKAY, RIGHT HERE, KATEY! HIDE IN MY CLOSET!"

Okay, I guess I know where Katey is. Especially since he's on the other side of the house and screaming at the top of his lungs. I start to laugh because I'm only on 5 (we count to 20), and the worry of running out of time to hide is so clear in his voice. Plus, it's pretty funny that he truly doesn't realize he's broadcasting her location with his yelling.

I giggle out, "Six...." listening to him tromp back down the hallway.

"Seven..." Suddenly, I hear lots of noise from 4 feet away.

THUMP! BUMP! WHOMP! Kyle has come back to the hamper to hide.

"Eight...." I am now fully laughing as I'm counting. I can barely get the numbers out. Seriously, it sounds like an elephant is walking by, he is making so much noise. Not to mention, I am only four feet away! And as I think about how he probably thinks he is being really stealthy, I just start to laugh more and more.

"Nine...ten...." He is still making noise, but now it is like a swooshing sound because he is in the hamper and settling himself and his limbs are rubbing against the sides. It is soooooo loud!

"Eleven..." He's still moving. How can he possibly think I don't know where he is? Apparently, it is the Ostrich complex.

Like a good Mom, I regain my composure and finish the counting, and I walk right by the hamper. "Now, where could Kyle be..."

Credit: Katey remained in the closet until I found her. :o)

Long Time

Wow, I've missed reporting on 7 months of my kids' growth. Not so big a deal for Kyle, but Katey...

Katey is talking. A lot. And very well. We constantly get compliments on how much she says and how well she says it. In February, at her 2 year check-up, the pediatrician was bowled over. She was fascinated that she spoke so much, was conjugating verbs, and using pronouns - correctly. At two and a half, she not only uses way more than 5 or 6 words in a sentence, but will use several sentences to express her ideas. Just something I want to remember. I will have to try and get her on tape in a long-winded idea. Naturally, at two and a half she seems extremely relunctant to do anything on cue!

Like Kyle, she is definitely emotional. Anyone who has known me as a child will understand that they both get this from me. She is very intense in everything. She parrots everything that Kyle says and does, particularly the stuff that is annoying. She's getting lots and lots of time-outs every day. But there is nothing more perfect and beautiful than when she is being utterly adorable.

Bowling

Kyle has been bugging us to take him bowling for several weeks. So yesterday we took him to the local bowling alley. When we walked in he said the bowling alley was the coolest place he'd ever been, and when we left he said he wished he could LIVE at the bowling alley.
